About Garth Mackenzie

Garth Mackenzie first became interested in the stock market in 1994 at age 14 when he and his father began monitoring the share price pages of the newspapers together. His father picked up his interest and encouraged him to "mock trade" with fictitious money. Together they hand drew charts of shares on the JSE and monitored their movements.
By age 16 Garth decided that he wanted to try trading for real, so again with the help of his father, he opened his first stock broking account and invested his modest savings into the market. Garth is the first to admit that this was not a particularly fruitful exercise and that he was an awful trader up until age 22. He regularly saw his money disappear as he made all the common mistakes that traders make when they start out. But he never gave up - constantly coming back after earning enough money on weekends and school holidays to recapitalize his account.
Garth studied a BCom degree at RAU with majors in Economics and Accountancy. During his studies, he obtained a part time job with Deel-Smith Securities - a small futures broking business. Once he graduated, he was employed full time at Deel-Smith Securities and sent to London as a broker of futures and options.
In 2002 he was approached by BoE Stockbrokers to start a retail derivatives desk and to roll out Single Stock Futures to the retail market. This is where Garth really began to flourish, growing the desk at BoE into a substantial business with a large share of the retail derivatives market. He became a regular market commentator on various South African TV and Radio programs and developed an illustrious profile in the industry.
In 2008 he launched a managed futures fund for BoE. This fund grew by 40% during 2008 - a time when global stock markets saw their sharpest declines in modern history. Today Garth trades his own capital for a living. He is the founder and editor of Summit TV’s Traders Corner program. He also writes a monthly column in the investors Monthly Magazine and a weekly column for the Financial Mail..
